Urban Environmental Health Lab
About the UEHL
Our Urban Environmental Health Lab (UEHL) is a community hub for health experts and local artists. These health and art fellows are brought together to build resilience to environmental health threats and creatively connect communities to equitable pollution prevention tools. UEHL programs include virtual and in-person workshops and trainings, access to free soil and water quality testing, and interactive exhibits that further understanding of local environmental health risks. UEHL seeks to connect people with the tools and actions vital to increase public health equity, environmental justice, and safety.
UEHL Fellows
Our UEHL program includes multiple paid fellowships. Our environmental health fellowship designed to showcase how community-based leadership and creativity are central to the health and wellbeing of New York City. Our Environmental Health Fellows are everyday New Yorkers, from community gardeners to asthma specialists to policy advocates, who work to make our air, water, and soil healthier.
Our Impact Artist Fellowship is for NYC-based artists to create public art projects that connect local neighborhoods with the important work of our Environmental Health Fellows.
Our youth fellows develop and implement their own environmental health projects with the support of community partners and professional mentors.
All fellows are invited to participate in an intensive storytelling training session withThe Moth.
Public Workshops
Our in-person and virtual workshops address issues of pollution awareness, remediation and preventative action alongside local environmental experts who have knowledge and experience within these fields. UEHL Workshops are reflective of the diversity of New York City communities, creating a platform to not only educate but to also celebrate the variety of local voices and knowledge.
MEET OUR 2021 HEALTH FELLOWS
Pollution Testing
We bring free air, soil and water quality testing to our communities with our mobile kiosque. The results from our pollution testing days are used to build a database of citizen-science environmental health data and are visualized through public art exhibits.
OUR PARTNERS
The Human Impacts Institute inspires environmental action for social good through the arts and culture.
The Moth Community Program provides the space, tools, and expertise for people to practice the art and craft of personal storytelling. Through workshops and performance opportunities, participants shape selected life experiences into well-crafted stories and share them with members of their communities and beyond.
The Urban Systems Lab is an interdisciplinary research, design and practice space at The New School that provides new insight into developing more equitable, resilient, and sustainable cities. The Lab’s work advances cutting edge science, data visualization, and computation to develop systemic solutions to social and environmental challenges driving inequity and injustice in urban areas.
Brooklyn Public Library (BPL) is an independent library system for the 2.6 million residents of Brooklyn.
Gen Space is the world’s first community biology lab — a place where people of all backgrounds can learn, create, and grow with the life sciences.
